Three states spoke in support of Taiwan at the UN General Assembly

The debate within the framework of the 77th UN General Assembly was held on September 20. The heads of Taiwan’s four diplomatic allies – Paraguay, Honduras, the Marshall Islands and Guatemala – spoke at them. All of them, except for the President of Honduras, spoke from the podium in support of Taiwan.

Paraguayan President Mario Abdo Benítez said that against the backdrop of the Russian-Ukrainian war and rising global inflation, no country should be excluded from the decision-making process. Paraguay reiterates its support for the participation of the Republic of China (Taiwan) in the UN system. Taiwan can make a significant contribution to the organization’s activities, Benítez said.

Marshall Islands President David Kabua concluded his speech with words of support for Taiwan. He said that the UN should adhere to the principles of inclusiveness and leave no country and no person outside of its activities. Kabua criticized the overly “politicized interpretation” of UN Resolution 2758 at a time when Taiwan could take practical part in the activities of international organizations and the UN.

Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammathei Falla spoke about the need to reform the UN, as well as guaranteeing Taiwan’s entry.

The President of Honduras, Siomara Castro, who was elected in January of this year, spoke for the first time from the rostrum of the Assembly. She did not mention Taiwan in her speech, as did her predecessors, who had not expressed support for Taiwan from the assembly podium in the past seven years.
